Bannermans Rock & Whisky Bar

Bannermans

Bannermans Rock & Whisky Bar

Marty DiBergi: Why don’t you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

Nigel Tufnel:
[pause] These go to eleven.

Edinburgh’s self-styled “Rock & Whisky Bar”, Bannermans is all about the music. Tucked away in the old city vaults under George IV Bridge, it’s a suitably gothic (and soundproofed!) location. Attracting some big names for a smaller independent venue they host both free gigs from up and coming bands and ticketed events from more established acts – but given the dedicated band room you’re always free to just wander in and enjoy a pint at the bar or in their “Jagerlouge” at the back with its own dedicated bar.

There’s a pool table for afternoon entertainment, with the occasional informal tournament, and Sunday afternoons are dominated by a chilled acoustic session.

Very reasonably priced snacks and pub grub are available, alongside a bar offering some great cask ales (Fraoch Heather Ale is always on, Bannermans is one of the only pubs in Scotland featuring it on a permanent basis) and there is, as their slogan suggests, a respectable selection of both single malts and stateside whiskey-with-an-e.

If you’re a fan of film trivia, the script for Shallow Grave was conceived and drafted in Bannermans, and if you pop in and soak up the atmosphere you’ll soon understand why!

Those who are about to rock, we salute you.
